Nitrogen in coal, as an important element, produces nitrogen oxides upon combustion that severely pollute the atmosphere, easily form acid rain, and acidify the soil. Additionally, nitrites are significant carcinogens. In the power industry, the determination of nitrogen content in coal can be used to calculate the heat of combustion, theoretical combustion temperature, composition of combustion products, and thermal balance.
